Telus & Bell to charge fees on incoming SMS

The story

Would you pay Canada Post a fee for every incoming mail being delivered to your house? I know I would not... especially considering the amount of unwanted mail I get every day.

Would you pay Bell Canada for every incoming call made to you house? We are not talking about collect calls which you have to accept before being charged.

Well, starting August 8 for Bell Mobility and August 24 for Telus Mobility, people who have a mobile phone with them will be charged a 15-cent fee for every incoming SMS made on their cell phone.

What is the rationale

Since 2002 when text messaging was made available in Canada they have seen an increase of 918% (not a typo here... last year more than 10.1 billion SMS were sent.

Can they really do this?

Apparenty yes they can do this. Almost everyone who gets a mobile phone signs a contract that basically says they can change the conditions any time with or without your consent.

Now, not everyone is jumping into that bandwagon. For example Rogers promised they would not charge for incoming SMS.

An idea

They said you could question charges made to your mobile so they can reimburse incoming SMS you did not request.

So, the idea here is that starting in August, let's question all charges on all incoming SMS no matter if you wanted them or not.
